Taking the responsibility and initiative to make your surroundings a better place was a lesson learned at a young age. On a school trip in 6th grade, I distinctly remember sitting with my friends, eating snacks and making a mess while riding a train to our destination. My teacher came by and told me to clean up my mess… In classic grade-school sass, I replied, “Why? People are paid to clean up after me.” My teacher, utterly disappointed looked me square in the eye and replied, “if everyone thought like you, the world would be full of trash.” From that moment forward, I understood the importance of doing your part and the impact it can have on a larger scale.

Growing up, I learned from the most giving people I know: my parents. They taught me the importance of service to others. Whether it’s a family member, friend, neighbor, or even a stranger—if someone is in need, you offer a hand. After all, it doesn’t take a grand act of kindness to make a difference in the world. It’s often the million little things, that with time and consistency, truly make a lasting difference.
